Welcome to our blog! We are excited to share the latest updates from the Wil & Rachel Blechman Fund, as featured in our December 2024 newsletter. This edition is all about the importance of play, not just for children but for adults too. We invite you to dive into the world of play and discover how it can enhance your life and the lives of the young children you care for.

The Power of Play:
Play is essential in the lives of children, but did you know that adults need to play too? Our newsletter this month is dedicated to helping adults understand the power of taking a few moments to play each and every day. When we experience the power of play as adults, we can offer rich, open-ended, engaging play experiences for young children. Engaging young minds in play stimulates higher-order thinking, imagination, and joy—benefits that apply to adults as well!

Benefits of Adult Self-Active Play:

  • Focus & Concentration: In a world where we are often pulled in many directions, self-active play provides an opportunity to be present and mindful.
  • Imagination & Creative Expression: Creative expression is a developmental need for both children and adults. When we play with open-ended materials, we use our imaginations to explore, create, and wonder what is possible.
  • Connection: Play helps us connect with ourselves, our thoughts, and our feelings. Through play, we also develop and strengthen loving relationships with others.
  • Relaxation & Stress Relief: Play promotes mental wellness as you take time to quiet your mind and experience peace, healing, and joy.
  • Discovery: As you take time to play, you’re learning about children and yourself. You also learn about play and its benefits to development and learning.
  • Surprise and Delight: As fingers fiddle with open-ended materials, your imagination takes over and presents you with unexpected possibilities and excitement.
  • Understanding the Power of Play: Taking time to engage in play as adults helps us understand the importance of play for young children.
