By Dr. Walter Drew
This past month at DCON, Kiwanis Play Leaders came together to experience the true power of play. It was inspiring to see so many of you exploring, creating, and sharing spontaneous three-dimensional compositions and stories during our Kiwanis Power of Play workshops. Your enthusiasm and creativity brought the room to life!

Why Play Matters
At the heart of our work is a simple but profound goal: to enrich hands-on play experiences for young children—and for all of us. Play is not just for fun; it is an essential tool for creativity, problem-solving, and community building. When we play, we connect with each other and with the joy of discovery.
A Treasure Hunt for Materials
One of the unique aspects of this initiative is the encouragement to approach local businesses and manufacturers for their unused or unwanted materials. Think of this as a treasure hunt! These simple resources—often overlooked—can become valuable play materials that inspire creativity in children and Kiwanis members alike.
Business leaders are eager to support efforts that help children develop imagination and problem-solving skills. By gathering and sharing these materials, you can provide meaningful play opportunities while strengthening ties within your community.
Bringing Play to Your Community
We encourage you to share the LET’S PLAY flyer with your Kiwanis Club members and consider hosting your own workshop. Public libraries, schools, or other community spaces make wonderful venues for these gatherings. Imagine the joy of families, children, and Kiwanis members coming together to create, laugh, and learn through play.
Stay Connected
This movement thrives on collaboration. Please stay in touch and let us know about your successes, challenges, and creative breakthroughs. Together, we can continue to grow the Kiwanis Power of Play initiative and spread the joy of hands-on play to communities everywhere.
Thank you for your dedication, energy, and willingness to play. It was an honor to witness the creativity you brought into the workshop. Let’s keep the momentum going—because when we play, everyone wins.
